EDITOR BIOS

Marilyn Brigham – Editor: Marshall Cavendish Children's Books

Marilyn has been working at Marshall Cavendish for the past 6 years, where she edits everything from board books through YA. She is a magazine journalism graduate from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and has worked briefly at a magazine and a film company. Her recent titles include Hero Dad, a picture book in which a boy compares his soldier dad to a superhero; A Field Guide to Aliens, a MG book of alien profiles; the Ogg and Bob chapter book series, which features two cavemen and their pet mammoth; and Soccerland, a YA girls’ sports novel. Marilyn loves edgy contemporary fiction, boy books, sports books, books with multicultural themes, chick lit, and humor. She would love to sign up more fiction for MG and YA and quirky picture books. She’s not the best match for historical fiction, nonfiction, high fantasy, or concept books. Marilyn recently wrote a board book concept that Marshall Cavendish will be publishing.

Karen Chaplin – Editor: Puffin/Speak Books

Karen is an Editor at Puffin/Speak books. She acquires and edits middle grade and young adult fiction and nonfiction. Some of the projects she has edited include the Girls Gone Green by Lynn Hirshfield, Students Across the Seven Seas (S.A.S.S.) series, Paris Pan Takes the Dare by Cynthea Liu, Zombie Queen of Newbury High by Amanda Ashby, Exclusively Chloe by J. A. Yang, and The Specialists series by Shannon Greenland. Karen is looking for fun, original series fiction as well as stand-alone fiction for the middle grade and young adult markets. While science fiction/fantasy is not her cup of tea, the genres she is looking for include chick lit, fun action/adventure series (boy and girl), mysteries, horror/paranormal, romance, and stories with strong female characters (including topics such as sisters and friendships).

Kendra Levin – Associate Editor: Viking Children’s Books an Imprint of Penguin Group (USA)

Kendra has spent the past five years working on a wide range of children’s literature from picture books to young adult novels. Prior to that, she worked at Scholastic in several different capacities. An award-winning playwright whose plays have been produced Off- and Off-Off Broadway, Kendra also helps writers as a teacher for Mediabistro and as a certified life coach. Authors she edits include David A. Adler (the Cam Jansen series), Susane Colasanti, Sharon Robinson, Madaline Herlong, Mike Knudson, and others.

Rotem Moscovich – Editor: Cartwheel Books, an imprint of Scholastic Trade Division

At Cartwheel, Rotem specializes in books for ages 0-6, including board books, innovative novelty books, preschool paper-over-board, picturebooks, and early readers, including the forthcoming Astroblast!: Moon Stone Mystery by Bob Kolar. I also edit select hardcover titles under the Scholastic Press imprint. I am looking for deceptively simple picturebooks (the “why didn’t I think of that?”), groundbreaking formats with content to match, and new twists on the tried-and-true. I received my masters from Simmons College, Center for the Study of Children’s Literature and sew bags in my “free” time.

AUTHOR BIOS

Mary E. Pearson

Mary E. Pearson is the author of several award winning books, including The Adoration of Jenna Fox, which is being made into a movie by 20th Century Fox. She is a native Californian and writes from her home in Carlsbad where she lives with her family and two very spoiled golden retrievers. Her book awards and honors include the Golden Kite Award, ALA Best Books for Young Adults, the NYPL Best Books, IRA Choice Books, and The South Carolina Young Adult Book Award. Her other novels include, A Room on Lorelei Street, The Miles Between, and her newest book, The Fox Inheritance which will be released in Fall 2011. For more information on Mary and her books visit www.marypearson.com

Marlene Perez

Marlene Perez is the author of several books for teens, including the best-selling DEAD IS series. The first book in the series, DEAD IS THE NEW BLACK, was named an ALA Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers as well as an ALA Popular Paperback. Her work has been featured in Girl’s Life, Seventeen, and Cosmopolitan and the Disney Channel has optioned the first three books in the DEAD IS series for television. She lives in Orange County, California with her family. Visit Marlene at www.marleneperez.com or at the Welcome to Nightshade Facebook Community Page at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Welcome-to-Nightshade-DEAD-IS.

Michael Reisman

Michael Reisman is the author of Simon Bloom: The Gravity Keeper and Simon Bloom: The Octopus Effect. He has worked as a story analyst for 11+ years for companies such as Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and, currently, Dreamworks Animation. Though born in Fair Lawn, NJ, Michael now lives in Los Angeles, CA, where he practices the ancient arts of power-napping, speaking in bad fake accents, and writing in coffee shops without actually liking coffee (but he's getting used to it). He can juggle and use chopsticks with either hand, but he cannot blow bubbles with gum. Seriously – not even a little.
